Explore Hinagdanan Cave: a Karst Cave with a Lagoon

Hinagdanan is one among many karst caves in Bohol with stalactite and stalagmite formations surrounding a lagoon that can reach up to 20 meters deep. Aside from being a wonder of nature, it also played a crucial role in the history of the province. It was a hideout by locals during the Second World War when the Japanese Imperial Army vacated the Philippines.

The discovery of this cave was chanced upon by a farmer who was clearing his land. At first he stumbled on a hole in the ground and decided to drop a rock inside to perceive how deep it is. When he heard a splash, he built a ladder, or ‘hagdan’ in local terms, to see inside. When he went down, he saw the cave’s beauty and gave it the name Hinagdanan.

Entrance into the cave can only be for one at a time. The slimy walkway is a hazard, so people should be careful when spelunking. Nowadays, there are restaurants and souvenir shops near the area that appeal to tourists that intend to use Hinagdanan.

Plenty have already visited this otherworldly destination, so make sure you don’t pass a chance!
